芭芭拉·哈里斯-怀特,英国社会科学院院士,牛津大学跨学科区域研究院高级研究员、发展研究教授。她拥有英国剑桥大学博士学位,曾任职于英国剑桥大学南亚研究中心、海外发展研究所(英国重要智库)、伦敦卫生与热带医学学院等机构。她于1987年进入牛津大学工作,曾是牛津大学发展研究生项目创始人兼主任、国际发展系主任、“当代印度”研究生项目以及区域研究所当代南亚研究项目创始人兼主任。其研究兴趣先后从农业市场经济学转向印度社会规制下的资本主义经济研究、农村贫困研究以及农村社会学研究。她对南印度地区的农政变迁和村庄转型颇有研究,自1972年以来一直对该地区一个集镇进行跟踪研究。目前主要致力于对政治生态学和能源消费与利用体制进行探究。出版著作40余部,发表论文200余篇。其代表作包括:《全球化与不安全感》(2001)、《印度研究集》(2003)、《面向21世纪的印度农村》(2004)、《乡村商业资本:西孟加拉邦的农业市场》(2008)、《发展的比较政治经济学:非洲和南亚》(2010)、《发展中的印度资本主义》(2014)等。因其成就卓越,2013年入选英国社会科学院士。芭芭拉·哈里斯-怀特教授曾多次受邀来中国进行调研和讲座讲学。
Short-bio of the speaker:
Professor Barbara Harriss-White is Senior Research Fellow at School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies; Professor Emeritus of Development Studies at University of Oxford; Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences, UK. She gained her PhD degree from the University of Cambridge.She has held contract research posts in the Center for South Asian Studies, Cambridge, the Overseas Development Institute, London and the LondonSchool of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, before being appointed toOxford in 1987.She was the founding director of Oxford’s MPhil in Development Studies and Director of Dept of International Development;founder of Oxford’s MSc in contemporary India, first Director of the Contemporary South Asian Studies Programme, School of Area Studies. Her research interests have developed from the economics of agricultural markets to India’s socially regulated capitalist economy, poverty in rural areas and rural sociology.She has a long term interest in agrarian change in S. India and has also tracked the economy of a market town there since 1972.Her present work is on exploring various aspects of political ecology and regimes of energy consumption and utilisation. She has written,edited or co-edited and published 40 books and major reports,published over 200 scholarly papers and book chapters on these topics,including the monographs:Globalization and Insecurity(2001), India Working: Essays in Society and Economy(2003), Rural India facing the 21st Century(2004), Rural Commercial Capital:Agriculture Market in West Bengal(2008),which was the winner of the Edgar Graham Prize), The Comparative Politics Economy of Development:Asian and S. Asia(2010), and the recently co-edited book Indian Capitalism in Development (2014).She was elected as Academician of the Academy of Social Science in 2013.Professor Barbara Harriss-White has been invited to China several times to give seminars and conduct collaborative research.
