Short-bio of the speaker:
Born in Friesland, North Netherlands in 1950, Jan Douwe van der Ploeg is a professor and the former Dean of Rural Sociology at the University of Wageningen (The Netherlands). He is also the adviser to the Italian Minister of Agriculture. His major research areas include peasant studies, styles of farming, rural development, land reforms, food markets and technological change. He has had many achievements in exploring agriculture in the Netherlands and in Europe from the perspective of development sociology and makes prominent contributions to studies on European agrarian history. By combining sociological studies in Europe, North America and the third world with development sociology, professor van der Ploeg contributed to the forging of a new powerful theoretical approach, exploring rural labour process analysis, commoditization, differential responses to technology development, cultural repertoires and the agency of actors. His representative works include The Stolen Future (1977); Labour, Markets and Agricultural Production (1990); Beyond Modernization: The Impact of Endogenous Rural Development (1995); The Virtual Farmer: Past, Present and Future of the Dutch Peasantry (2003); The New Peasantries: Struggles for Autonomy and Sustainability in an Era of Empire and Globalization (2008) and Peasants and the Art of Farming: A Chayanovian Manifesto (2013). One of his books - The New Peasantries (2008) has been translated into multiple languages, exerting profound impacts in Europe and the third world countries. The conception of ‘the new peasantries’ has gained great significance in understanding global agricultural and agrarian change.
