The College of Humanities and Social Development can be traced back to the ancient Agriculture Research Group of Northwest Agricultural College founded in 1952 on the initiative of Mr. Xin Shuzhi and the Political Theory Teaching and Research Group of Northwest Agricultural College founded in 1953. In 1997, the College of Humanities of Northwest Agricultural University was established. In 2000, the Department of Social Sciences was merged into the College of Humanities and Social Development. For more than half a century, a large number of scholars have produced outstanding achievements, such as Xin Shuzhi, Shi Shenghan who once worked here and contributed a lot.

College has a doctoral degree authorization center of Sociology Science and two Master's degree authorization Centers with Social Science and History of Science and Technology. There are also four professional Master's degree authorization centers of Social Work, Rural Development (Master degree of Agriculture), Law and Public Management, as well as five endergraduate majors including Sociology, Social Work, Law, Public Affairs Management, Labor and Social Security. Among them, Sociology was approved as national first-class professional major, and Law was approved as provincial first-class professional major.

The College consists of four teaching and scientific research organizations: Department of Sociology and Social Work, Department of Law, Department of Public Administration, and Institute of Chinese Agricultural History and Culture (Teaching Center of Traditional Chinese Culture). It has three provincial-level research platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Traditional Agricultural Heritage of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the Research Center for Chinese Agricultural History and Culture, the Key Research base for Philosophy and Social Sciences in Shaanxi Province, and the Collaborative Innovation Research Center for Rural Governance and Social Construction of Shaanxi Province. Master of Social Work Education Center, Master of Law Education Center and other professional degree training institutions and humanities and Social Science Experiment Center, Agricultural Law and Environmental Law Research Center of Shaanxi Province. MPA Education Center and Rural Social Research Center of Northwest A&F University are affiliated to the College.

At present, there are 90 faculty members, including 76 full-time teachers, 14 professors, 36 associate professors, 14 doctoral supervisors, 38 master supervisors. There are 1 Chair professor, 3 visiting professors and 2 part-time professors. Among all the faculties, one was selected as member of National Social Science Fund Board, one was selected as the Outstanding Young Teacher Support Program of the Ministry of Education, one was selected as Humanities and Social Sciences Young Talents Support Program of Shaanxi Province, one was Young Top-notch Talent in the "Special Support Plan" in Shaanxi Province, 1 distinguished professor of the "High-level Talent Introduction Program" in Shaanxi Province, 1 Zhongying Scholar, 4 outstanding talents in Fenggang Programme, and more than 20 vice presidents and directors of national and provincial academic associations.

At present, there are nearly 800 Ph.D candidates and postgraduates, as well as more than 1000 undergraduate students in the university. The students have won more than 40 national awards, such as National Students' Challenge Cup Competition, National Students' Public Administration Case Competition, National Students' English Competition and National Students' Mathematical Modeling Competition. Besides, more than 100 students go to well-known universities demosticly and abroad for further study every year, and nearly 50% of them stay in the central and western regions of China voluntarily, making achievements in serving the society at the grassroots level.

In the past five years, the faculties of the College obtained 1 major project of the National Social Science Foundation of China, 2 key projects, 1 major project of philosophy and social science research of the Ministry of Education, 2 major projects of the Social Science Foundation of Shaanxi Province, the general project of the National Social Science Foundation of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and other provincial and ministerial scientific research projects. Besides, the first prize of Shaanxi Province Philosophy and Social Science Achievements and more than 20 other provincial and ministerial awards were obtaied ,too. More than 20 consultation reports have been adopted by provincial leaders or departments; more than 50 academic works, more than 200 academic papers, and important research achievements have been published in authoritative journals such as Philosophical Research, Historical Research, Education Research, and Ethnic Studies. The College Undertook important conferences such as the "China Rural Development Forum", "Rural Social Governance and Precision Poverty Alleviation" International Forum, academic seminars on China's agricultural cultural heritage and traditional farming civilization, etc., conducting the "Rural • Society • Development" Forum with overseas scholars , nearly 100 well-known Chinese and foreign scholars were invited to give lectures.

The Party Committee of the College was selected into the second batch of benchmark colleges and universities for Party construction in Shaanxi Province, and the Youth League Committee was selected into the first batch of benchmark colleges and universities for league construction in Shaanxi Province. New stage of cohesion, its new journey, standing on the transformation of the development of new historical position in college. The college will carry out  the "12345" development strategy of the University, docking the needs of national rural revitalization, governance system and modernization of governance capacity, being guided by the "New Arts Construction", adhering to the College motto of "Promoting moral integrity, to learn and apply it to life, so that people can reach the highest level of perfection", striving for the goal of first-class institute of agriculture-related humanities and social development in China.
